Dear friends,
Some of you may have heard by now, but I wanted to let everyone who might be interested to know that Larry went to be with the Lord last Friday (March 16th). He was in Hospice care for about a month. All of our children, except for James were able to visit Larry at the Hospice Facility. Libby was able to drive here from Alabama and brought three of her children, which was a special blessing. I'm sure the grandchildren could have thought of happier ways to spend spring break!
There will be a memorial service here in Pharr TX. on Thursday March 29th. On April 10th we will have a grave side service at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California.
The people here have been wonderfully supportive, both in prayer and in doing many of the errands that need to be done. They have no intention of letting me starve either. My refrigerator "runneth over".
Thanks for the cards many of you have sent, but most of all for your prayers. We have all quoted " My Grace is sufficient" many times. I can say from this experience it truly is.
I'm determined to learn how to e-mail while my girls are here. Shirley and Laurie are coming tomorrow. The girls will show me how to keep in touch.
The latest address is : allmon70@juno.com
Thank you again for your concern and for your prayers.
Love in Christ
Margaret

A letter from Larry & Margaret written in February, 2001 - See the Family Update below...
An Allmon Annual Epistle
Larry & Margaret Allmon
February, 2001
Dearly Beloved!
We owe so many of you a letter, how could we even begin to fulfill that obligation? Each year (for the past 9, or so!) I have determined to write a “post-Christmas” letter to all our friends; BUT mega procrastination sets in, and, well, here we are now two years (!) after I began even THIS letter.
At my age (aided by diaries and some relaxed time to reminisce) I think often of all of you - individually. How you have contributed to our lives in such a marvelous variety of ways; it makes the reality of the Body of Christ so much more than just nice theology! In case you remember us, and are in any way interested in where we are and what we are doing, here is the latest “skinny”:
Future Location and Recent Occupation(s):
As of the end of March, we will be living, D.v., just outside Tucson, Arizona. (I’ll explain why a bit further on.)
On December 31, 1998 I officially retired from my position as Office Administrator (a.k.a. “The Church Guy”) of the Felton Evangelical Free Church, a position I had had since we moved up here from Los Angeles in 1996 to live with my mom. We have lived downstairs in her Mount Hermon home of 20+ years and hoped to be of some help to her in her declining years (she will be 84 in August). We have all gotten along fairly well and my easygoing wife adapted beautifully - she is such an awesome “phlegmatic”!
The “hard” part, of course, of living here in Mount Hermon has been trying to cope with all the beauty of these redwoods, small town life (after years in Los Angeles), quiet, and proximity to the beach at Santa Cruz ! We missed being near our kids, but they are now scattered all over, as I will later describe, if you are at all interested.
As for now, we are trying to get everything packed up for the movers and I am currently working as a part time “Cabin Inspector” (34 cabins to be inspected each week in preparation for the arriving guests) for the Mount Hermon Conference Center. I did a five-week stint in 1999 canvassing “living quarters” in our area (960+ in my section) with the U.S. Bureau of the Census in preparation for the actual count in 2000. It was a part-time, flex-time, outdoor, people-meeting job! Perfect! From May ‘99 through Christmas I was a train brakeman & conductor (YES!!!) for the old-time steam Roaring Camp Railroad just across the road from us..
While I was “term-limited” off the Board of Missions at the church several years ago, I am totally grateful to the Lord of the Harvest for our pastor and his wife’s visit to a consultation on reaching the Uyghurs, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan! I believe their direct, face-to-face contacts with believing Uyghurs and the expatriates working among this huge, “unreached people” will help us here in Felton realize the importance of our own prayer role in the enterprise to reach this 10 million people group in NW China and Kazakhstan with the “Great News”. It is very encouraging to realize this interest in the Uyghurs will continue after we leave. Even the AWANA kids know about Uyghurs; contributing funds to send a number of Uyghur families to a Christian camp last year! Our church, I believe, was one of the very first to “adopt” the Uyghurs as a prayer project over 15 years ago when there was NO witness among them!
Margaret has been a Deaconess and Assistant Church Librarian (we really do have a very nice library for our size church!) She has also worked part time in the Mount Hermon dining room.
My wife of 44+ years and I are well (for our age) and coping with the daily vicissitudes of life! I have also prepared a brochure advertising my Temperament Course (titled: “Who Am I? Who Are You? - I mean, Really!”). I will be sending them out to see if any church or group might be interested in hosting this seminar. This is a “fun” series, but extremely helpful, I’ve found, in bringing individuals to accept who they were designed by God to be!
(If the above is what you have been wondering about us, you needn’t read the rest of the letter which only deals with our spectacular children and grandchildren)
You may stop here, if you like!

Family update:
Our Number One, Margie, lives with her extremely talented husband Terry (a computer games company art director), twin boys Chris and Matt (now 15) and the “Princess” Esther Margaret (a.k.a. “Emmy”) almost 9, in the beautiful Ponderosa Basin midway between Oakhurst and Mariposa at the edge of Yosemite!
They are totally (and I mean totally) involved in the close-by Ponderosa Basin Chapel: a church we love, too.
Number Two daughter, Shirley, lives in the beautiful “Bavarian village” of Leavenworth, Washington, right at the eastern edge of the snowcapped Cascades with her entrepreneur/custom cabinet builder/craftsman husband, Jay, and their three boys: Nathan (19 and a half and attending Seattle Pacific University), B.J. - a.k.a. Brady - (18 and scheduled to attend Point Loma University in the fall), and Jacob (15). They live in their new “Victorian” three-story home: full porches front and back with a fabulous view of the mountains! Jay’s cabinet shop next door is doing extremely well and their picturesque alpine hotel, “The Leavenworth Inn” in town is holding its own! Music lessons, sports and debate teams, church activities all keep them spinning. (We’ll be heading up there for the high school graduation of their number two in June. Are we really old enough to have a grandkids graduating from high school???)
Daughter Number Three, Libby, lives about 30 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama with her new (of 5 years) husband, Dwaine (a neat guy; a computer whiz quality control expert with Bell South) and her four plus his one. (Dwaine also has an older daughter -18- living in Huntsville). They have a magnificent 6 bedroom, 4 bath, 2 huge family rooms, plus mega swimming pool on 3 ½ wooded acres estate (we were there for Christmas in ‘99) Don’t ask the purchase price, Californians, you would be totally dismayed!!! Libby is now a bona fide RN. (We are SO proud of her) After the horror of her past marital situation, we are delighted that her kids have adjusted well and love their new dad. Joshua is 19; Caleb is a very tall, quiet 17, witty Michael is also 17, the beautiful “Princess” Sarah is 13 and the youngest (10) was even allowed to change his name in the adoption process to “Jason Larry”! (How’s that for grandpa chest-swelling, I ask you?)
Number Four daughter, Laurie, lives in Whittier with her brood of five (5) and her journeyman self-employed big-rig welder, Harry. He works usually on site on truly BIG earth-moving equipment, and is really too much (in my opinion) in demand! The four boys (Joseph, 17, David, 16, Samuel, 14, and Benjamin, 10) are all toying with acting, music: piano, saxophone, and drums.
The “Princess” Hannah (8) usually has them and the entire neighborhood all buffaloed! In addition to all the music lessons, sports teams, etc. chauffeuring, and family business bookkeeping, Laurie is head of the local PTA and will probably run the whole school district one of these days. She is one involved parent! They are now looking for a nearby church since the meetings of the Harvester Mission in Highland Park are no longer.
Number One Son, Charlie, and wife: “Wonder Woman” Lisa, lived in den Haag (“The Hague”, to y’all) in the Netherlands; neighbors to Queen Beatrix for 3 years. (We spent the entire month of November, 1998 with them at their insistence!) Charlie is a Raytheon-U.S. Gov’t-NATO “rocket scientist”. We had a marvelous pre-retirement time with them, visiting Madrid, Spain, north and south Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as a lot of the Netherlands: canals, ancient churches, windmills, art museums, Anne Frank and Ten Boom (as in Corrie) homes, and a memorable Thanksgiving Day Service at an old church in Leiden: the home of the Pilgrims from 1609 to 1620 from where they sailed to the New World via Plymouth England. Charlie has since been reassigned to Tucson, Arizona. Which brings up why we are moving there!
The house here at Mount Hermon where we have been living is actually owned by my brother who will retire the end of March from Lockheed-Palmdale. They are planning to move in here, so we are planning to move out! (It is a small house). Once we get a phone number in Tucson, we’ll let you know.
Number Two Son, James, we believe is “coming around”, attends church regularly, and is living in Glendale with his wife (another Lisa). They are expecting in June. (That will make a grand total of 19 grandkids for us!)
Thanks for reading clear to the end; we would love to hear from you! Especially if you have a change of address, a new phone or a new e-mail number.
Love (from the both of us),
Larry & Margaret
